Aboriginal Heritage - Working Together

posted Jul 6, 2011, 3:04 AM by GLSC Council
In response to your article ‘Meet with ministers’ in yesterday’s paper, dated 16 June 2011, the Goldfields Land and Sea Council (‘GLSC’) – the Aboriginal Representative Body for the region – would like to make a reply to some of the important issues raised.

Firstly, Aboriginal heritage is regulated by the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA). It needs to be understood by all those in the mining industry that this Act affects not just prospectors, but Aboriginal people as well. As part of any planning process in the mining industry, everyone should be aware of compliance issues upfront, remembering that the Act has been in place since 1972. While we understand that some in this industry might be perplexed with the Act, it is a legal document that people should understand before starting any mining venture.
